- A grown elephant needs to eat a 200–600 pounds of food everyday and they wash that down with 50 gallons of water per day. (Imagine trying to bring that food and water home from the drive through for a family of four.)
- The babies suckle up to a range between 3 to 4 yers..by the time they are a year old 40% of their diet is from vegetation. And all through these developmental years the babies are being shown how to find food and how their mothers and aunties eat. An elephant’s trunk has over 40,000 muscles and have over 150,000 muscle groups for control…the first nine months a baby is trying to learn how to control all those muscles. I
- Just as important as being taught to eat, baby elephants spend most of their time being taught to socialize with the other babies and the adult females in the herd. It really is a village that helps to raise a baby elephant.
- Babies learn different survival skills and not just from their mother but from all of the adult females in the herd. And each adult is teaching different experiences to the babies. We knows…
