I have been amazed that in the series of stories I’ve written about elephants that the one about elephant sex has had the vast majority of reads. It has me contemplating starting an elephant porn website…just kidding, elephants won’t touch computers because they are afraid of mice…an old joke…

Before we talk about saving elephants, a couple of more tidbits about Asian elephant sex. There are some differences from their African cousins. The females come into season ( a time of conception four times a year and it only lasts a couple of days), and when she knows she’s ready, she literally lets out a call to the males that can be heard up to three miles away (‘I’m ready dears!’) . Of course the males will battle to see who will be her suitor, but rarely is there serious injury to more than the loser’s pride. The victorious male will stay with the female for up to three days and mount her four or five times each day. The actual time conception is during one of those three days. He doesn’t actually penetrate her vagina, but sprays his sperm on the vagina to get the job done.

But there is no use learning about elephant sex unless we help to save them…
